Lucas Heights is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located approximately 35 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. The postcode is 2234. Lucas Heights was named after John Lucas Senior, a flour miller who in 1823 was granted 150 acres on the ‘head of unnamed stream into Georges River’. He built a water-driven mill for grinding corn using convict labour between 1822 and 1825. The area was traditionally inhabited by the Dharawal people for millennia, who utilised local waterways for fishing and foraging. European settlement began with John Lucas’s land grant in 1823-1824. Following World War II, the Australian Atomic Energy Commission selected Lucas Heights for nuclear research, with construction commencing in October 1955 on the High Flux Australian Reactor (HIFAR), which achieved criticality and began operations in early 1958. Lucas Heights is notable as the home of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), Australia’s sole operational research reactor facility. The OPAL (Open-pool Australian Lightwater) reactor was commissioned in August 2006 and officially opened in April 2007, replacing HIFAR. Operating at 20 megawatts thermal power, it produces molybdenum-99 for technetium-99m generators, meeting about 80% of Australia’s domestic demand and supporting approximately 10,000 to 12,000 nuclear medicine procedures weekly across Australia.
